Amsterdam and around .............

I went to see Chris in mid February. His house is situated between two of the many lakes, at LOOSDRECHT, and is about 20 Km southeast of Amsterdam.

There are moorings on the lake at the back of the house. This lake connects to other lakes, the canals, and the river. It provides ice skating in the winter and sailing and other watersports in the warmer weather.

Just over the road at the front of the house is a cycle path, which cuts across the water.....

Amsterdam itself appeared to be undergoing a fair bit of refurbishment in readiness for the tourist influx. The main attractions are mostly within walking distance of the Central Station, although trams, traffic and cyclists can make this a hazardous occupation ! Public transport seems very good and canal trips are also available.

A brief tour of the area between Amsterdam and Hilversum ( still the centre for the media, now including television ) , took in Muiden, Naarden / Bussum, Blaricum and Laren. It provided a good insight ( thanks to Fred, a local neighbour of Chris ) into the earlier history of the district and changes which have taken place over the last 30 or 40 years.

There were windmills, of course .... and the distinctive Dutch style lifting bridges along the canals and River Vecht. Stops were made at some of the historical ports, villages and towns, to see early churches, civic buildings, cathedrals and castles, as well as village and farm houses which have now been engulfed by the more recent development.

In the Loosdrecht area, good food is available at a number of bars and restaurants. These provide well patronised meeting places where popular swing / jazz is played ...... to a high standard.

Altogether a very enjoyable trip, and I look forward to returning soon !
