If you can count separate things ( nouns ), it is

How MANY ?... ( apples, people, things, pieces, coins )

If not

How MUCH ? .. ( water, sand, hurt, sadness, money )

Quantity usually implies more than one. If more than one, then think PLURAL ( See Notes )

The moment you use words or phrases like these, think plural. There are others.

a lot, a few, many, more, most, less, some, any, a couple of, several,

Quantity can be precise or not precise

2 kilos of apples ..... some apples, a few apples, many apples

If you are making a negative statement ,use ... not ..... any ( do not use some ),

I do not have any apples

not a lot of ..... Implies you have some, ...but not many
