TO, FOR and FROM ............................... BACK to INDEX

One way to understand these words is by thinking direction of travel, relative to the object or place, e.g.

you give to him.. you take from him........ I go to London.. I come back from London

or purpose, e.g.

I bought it for her. ... He took it for safe keeping. ... They were looking for us.

Take the brush for cleaning the car from John and give it to Sally.

We went to the market to buy clothes for the children. We came back from the market and gave the clothes to the children.

Note: When talking to someone who is already at the place where you will be going to, you would say,

John, when I come to London to see you ......

But when talking to someone who is with you about your visit to London, you would say.

When I go to London to see John .........
