GIBRALTAR ............ Visited 14th - 21st January 2002.
Gibraltar, a British outpost in the Mediterranean, is dominated by a limestone rock. It was regarded by Roman and Greek geographers as one of the pillars of Hercules. The name Gibraltar is allegedly derived from Tarik, an Arab corsair. ( Gebel Tarik ... meaning Hill of Tarik ). It was captured from the Moors by Spain in 1309, although retaken some 24 years later. It became Spanish again in 1462.
Gibraltar was captured by the British and Dutch in 1779. Since then there have been many unsuccessful sieges, and other attempts by the Spanish, to retake the Rock. It proved to be of great strategic importance during two World Wars.
According to legend, British occupation of the Rock will end if the apes die out.
